ROTORUA CANOPY TOURS COMMISSION

X January 26, 2018

Nothing excites me more than a mural commission that celebrates the beauty that is Aotearoa! That’s why I was super stoked when this job landed in my inbox.

Rotorua Canopy Tours was looking for a mural to showcase the breathtakingly beautiful scenery on their tours. Think lush greenery, gorgeous native birds and a fiery red sunset – just stunning.

Canopy Tours offer a three hour guided tour – New Zealand’s ONLY Native Forest Zipline Tour – through their magical forest in the Bay of Plenty. The tour is a 1.2 kilometre network of ziplines, swing bridges and treetop platforms. The highest platform is raised an impressive 22 metres into the canopy of the ancient native forest – I can confirm from personal experience that the view is incredible!

This piece took two days down in Rotorua at Canopy Tours sweet HQ to complete. It includes magnificent native blue mushrooms werewere-kōkako (kōkao wattle); rata trees; manuka flowers; ferns; bellbirds, robins and tui; and a zipliner floating through adds the finishing touch.

And when you don’t think it could get any better, Canopy Tours also funds a massive conservation project to protect the native plants and birds that live in the forest. Their dream is to restore the eco-system to the one Captain James Cook discovered on arrival to New Zealand – full of loud bird chorus. Caring for New Zealand’s native flora and fauna is something really close to my heart.

Check out some of the pics and vids from the paint below and give Canopy Tours website a visit to book yourself an amazing experience right here.

If you’d like to have your very own, unique Flox commissioned piece I can create anything from private hand-painted pieces on paper, to commercial wall murals, product collaborations – even cars!

My Story

As an aerosol and stencil artist with a fine art degree, Flox has been making her mark on the inner cityscape of Auckland since 2003.

Her trademark native birds, ferns and flowers are a celebration of Aotearoa’s environmental taonga. Using distinctly vibrant and confident colour on a scale combined with delicacy they have magically transformed grey walls into vibrant depictions of the natural world.

Flox swiftly expanded her practice into prints, publications, murals, graphic design, live painting, projects and workshops for both schools and the wider public. She has been involved in numerous collaborations, charity work and both group and solo exhibitions.

Her accessible narratives have broadened the appeal and shaped her into one of New Zealand’s most recognised contemporary artists.

In recent years Flox has focused on refining new ideas, exploring other cultures and pushing her own artistic boundaries. This resulted in a three-month Artist Residency in Taiwan and a journey to Udaipur in India, to expand her international audiences.

Seen everywhere from Berlin, Hong Kong, New York, Taiwan, India and the US, Flox continues spreading her wings and making her presence felt across public spaces and homes worldwide.
