This large-scale mural was created for Hamilton Gardens, a site renowned for its diverse collection of themed gardens that reflect cultures from around the world. The artwork celebrates this unique meeting place by intertwining both exotic and native flora, symbolising the coming together of different landscapes and traditions.
At its heart are bold depictions of fig, kōwhai, olives, peonies, marigold, and camellia — each referencing a garden within the centre. The marigold nods to the vibrancy of the Indian Garden, while olives honour the Mediterranean spirit of the Italian Garden. The kōwhai grounds the mural in Aotearoa, connecting the space to its whenua, while peonies, figs, and camellias extend the dialogue outward to other cultures.
Layered in FLOX’s signature style, the mural radiates colour and energy, with each botanical wrapping and weaving around the Hamilton Gardens quadrant symbol. This integration makes the piece deeply site-specific — a joyful, visual celebration of the Gardens as a space where cultures, people, and nature converge.
