This mural concept has been designed to celebrate the essence of MacKenzie College and its five guiding mantras: Manaakitanga, Aspire, Grit, Integrity, and Creativity. Each value is represented through visual storytelling that connects directly to the school’s identity, its landscape, and the community that surrounds it.
At the heart of the design sits the school’s emblem — the three mountains — enlarged and central to the composition. This grounding form becomes the anchor from which all other elements radiate, symbolising unity and strength of foundation. Surrounding the logo, hearts reflect Manaakitanga — compassion, kindness, and care for one another. Stars represent Aspire — the drive to aim high and reach beyond the horizon.
The White Rātā, a resilient alpine vine, symbolises Grit, its strength and perseverance echoing the determination of MacKenzie students. Integrity is portrayed through structure — the rhythmic, repeating curves that mirror the circular form of the logo, creating balance, harmony, and a sense of trustworthiness. And finally, Creativity comes through the mural itself — in its colour, energy, and the celebration of artistic expression that defines both the school’s spirit and my own practice.
Two small but mighty native birds, the Tomtit and Tītipounamu (Rifleman), serve as the heroes of the piece. Both are found in the Mackenzie region and embody courage and persistence — a reminder that strength is not measured by size, but by perseverance and heart. Supporting flora such as Mountain Daisy and Mount Cook Lily — both hardy alpine species — further reflect the school’s enduring connection to its landscape and the resilience of its community.
Together, these elements create a mural that not only reflects the values of MacKenzie College but also celebrates its place — nestled among the mountains, rich in nature, character, and creative potential.
