Tropical Punai

Tropical Punai is a hand-painted work on archival paper that sits unmistakably within FLOX’s signature visual language — bold in colour, richly botanical and built through subtle overlays of pattern, form and detail.

Created in response to her time in Sumba, the work draws on the lush flora of the island, with orchids, sandalwood and sweeping banana palms layered into a vibrant tropical landscape. At its heart is the Punai, a local pigeon whose presence immediately caught FLOX’s attention.

There was something wonderfully familiar about the bird — in its form, character and behaviour, FLOX saw echoes of Aotearoa’s much-loved kererū. That unexpected familiarity became another small but meaningful connection between the two lands.

Through colour, flora and birdlife, Tropical Punai captures the experience of discovering something new while simultaneously being reminded of home — a quintessential FLOX work shaped by Sumba, yet carrying Aotearoa within it.
