Written by Malcolm Clarke, illustrated by FLOX, and thoughtfully designed and published by Mary Egan Publishing, this enchanting tale, the first of two books, was inspired by Malcolm's deep admiration for New Zealand's native wildlife and his desire to introduce young readers to the extraordinary beauty of the natural world.
The title, Tu Meke Tūī, is rooted in the New Zealand Māori phrase "tumeke," traditionally meaning "to startle or take fright." In recent years, "tu meke" has evolved as a colloquial expression, conveying a sense of awe or excitement—perfectly capturing the spirit of the story.
At its heart, Tu Meke Tūī follows the journey of Tere the Tūī and Taitu the Takahē—two very different birds. While Tere thrives in the freedom of the skies, Taitu finds solace in the rustling undergrowth. Their story is one of friendship, bravery, and the realisation that it is often our differences that make us truly special.
